  7. COMPATIBLE DRIVERS FOR WIRELESS NETWORK ADAPTERS

  12. (TUCSON, AZ -- October 12, 1992) -- Artisoft, Inc.
  13. announced today that Solectek Corp. and NCR, an AT&T
  14. company, have signed joint agreements with Artisoft to
  15. develop software drivers that will connect Solectek's
  16. parallel port AirLAN(TM) wireless network adapter and NCR's
  17. wireless WaveLAN(TM) card to a LANtastic network. Solectek
  18. and NCR have recently signed on with Artisoft's Driver
  19. Development Program and are the first wireless adapter
  20. manufacturers to develop drivers for Artisoft's LANtastic
  21. Local Area Network.

  23. "These partnerships with Solectek and NCR demonstrate
  24. Artisoft's vision to give users flexibility in platform and
  25. application compatibility," commented Ken Davis, Artisoft's
  26. Director of Business Analysis and Alliance. "These wireless
  27. LAN adapters can be used to augment existing LANtastic
  28. networks or to temporarily run a network at a remote
  29. location."

  31. Solectek's AirLAN is the first wireless network adapter
  32. that attaches externally to IBM(R)-compatible computers and
  33. is ideal for adding network nodes in difficult-to-wire
  34. areas. AirLAN's plug-and-play installation requires less
  35. than 10 minutes and is particularly well-suited for peer-
  36. to-peer network applications.

  38. "Ease of use is the key element of our partnership with
  39. Artisoft," commented James DeBello, President of Solectek.
  40. "Combining AirLAN and LANtastic simplifies installation and
  41. network operation, and should greatly expand the use of
  42. networks among large and small businesses, particularly
  43. those which were reluctant to install a LAN due to
  44. complicated installations and cabling costs."

  46. Solectek's AirLAN adapter uses NCR's WaveLAN security-
  47. enhanced, spread spectrum technology. WaveLAN technology in
  48. the 915 MHz band can penetrate walls, ceilings and floors
  49. and does not require a radio license. Typical coverage is
  50. 50,000 square feet.

  52. NCR's WaveLAN card -- which is being used to network
  53. offices, stores, banks, manufacturing sites and hospitals -
  54. - provides users the freedom to place, as well as to move,
  55. a workstation to wherever they want and still be linked to
  56. their network. The WaveLAN system, which operates as a true
  57. LAN, can easily be interconnected to Token Ring and
  58. Ethernet wired LANs.

  61. customers who want a simple, cost- effective way to create
  62. and manage an information network in their workplace," said
  63. Khaled Marrei, vice president of NCR's Wireless
  64. Communications and Networking Division. "Network-ready PCs
  65. that require no wiring means that a move or change in a
  66. network is as simple as picking a PC and placing it at the
  67. new location."

  69. The WaveLAN card is designed to provide network-ready
  70. systems, where the LAN operating system and WaveLAN card
  71. are pre-installed. Users simply take the network-ready PC
  72. out of the box, plug it in, attach a small, external omni-
  73. directional antenna with velcro to any nearby surface --
  74. and the PC is on the network.

  76. The LANtastic-compatible drivers will be included at no
  77. extra cost with each unit of AirLAN and WaveLAN. Pricing is
  78. $699 for the AirLAN adapter and $799 for the WaveLAN card.
